Jams, bent staples, and stapling nothing usually mean worn anvil or spring — most desk staplers die cheap and are worth repairing only if you like the object.

Tools you may need

• Flat screwdriver (spring repair)
• Correct staples

Steps

1. 1Empty the magazine and clear jammed staples with needle-nose pliers.
2. 2Check the anvil plate for wear; bent anvils cause curved staples.
3. 3Refill with the correct staple size — mixing sizes causes jams.
4. 4Test 5 sheets; replace if it still chews paper.
