A mesh screen frame that separates finished compost from half-broken material. Sift the good stuff into the bed and return the lumps for another round.

Replacement cost

Typical lifespan

Maintenance
every 6 months

Tools you may need

Steps

  1. Set the sifter over a wheelbarrow or garden cart.
  2. Shovel compost onto the screen a load at a time.
  3. Shake side to side; finished crumbs fall through, woody chunks stay on top.
  4. Return the overs to the bin and move the sifted compost to the bed.

Maintenance

Knock dried compost out of the mesh after each use; check the frame joints seasonally. (Suggested interval: every 6 months.)
