The bake pan and the slide-out crumb tray underneath the heating elements. A warped pan scorches unevenly and a full crumb tray is the classic toaster-oven smoke source.

Steps

1. 1Unplug the oven and let it cool fully.
2. 2Slide the old crumb tray out from the bottom lip and empty it.
3. 3Seat the new tray flush; it should slide free without catching.
4. 4Load the new bake pan on the rack and run one empty 10-minute cycle to burn off mill oils.

Maintenance

Empty the crumb tray monthly — more often with daily toasting; hand-wash pans to keep the coating. (Suggested interval: every month.)
