Kitchen · Moderate

The wear parts inside a sink drain: tailpieces, slip-joint washers, P-trap kits, and gaskets. A slow drip under the sink is almost always one five-dollar gasket, not a new sink.

Tools you may need

Steps

  1. Put a bucket under the trap and loosen the slip nuts by hand or with pliers.
  2. Identify the failed part: cracked washer, corroded tailpiece, or split trap.
  3. Assemble the new kit dry first — dry-fit every joint before final tightening.
  4. Hand-tighten slip nuts plus a quarter turn, run water, and check for weeps.

Maintenance

Check under-sink joints yearly; rubber washers flatten and weep before they drip. (Suggested interval: every 1 year.)
