Sconce Shade

The fabric, glass, or metal shade on a wall sconce. Yellowed fabric and chipped glass date a whole hallway — shade swaps are the fastest sconce refresh there is.

Tools you may need

• Stepladder
• Screwdriver (Uno styles)

Steps

1. 1Kill power and let the bulb cool fully.
2. 2Note the old shade's fitting type and measure its top and bottom diameters.
3. 3Fit the new shade — clip styles press over the bulb, spider styles seat on the harp with a finial.
4. 4Restore power and check the shade sits level and clears the bulb by an inch.

Maintenance

Dust fabric shades with a lint roller; check clip tension at each bulb change. (Suggested interval: every 6 months.)
